History of Bethlehem Lutheran Church 1996 to 2000

  • 1996 In 1996, the outside of the church was upgraded by installing siding. Dan Morin directed this project and members pledged money to pay for certain sections. The Sunday school filled 50 Christmas stockings for children at the Damiano Center and the Union Gospel Mission.A Saturday morning men’s breakfast and Bible study met each week at Black Woods Restaurant. Bethlehem member Karen Linne' began her studies at Luther Seminary. A mentor program was started for youth. Bible school was led for the first time by counselors from Voyageurs Lutheran Ministry rather than by Bethlehem members. Before Christmas, the women baked and donated cookies that were sold as part of a “cookie walk.”
  • 1998 In 1998, church women delivered 99 pounds of soap and 28 quilts to the WELCA convention for Lutheran World Relief. Sunday school took on a mission project each month by supporting Bethany Crisis Nursery, Proctor House for Men, and school supplies for local students in need. Bethlehem celebrated 90 years of church outreach in the Proctor community.
  • 1999 In 1999, Karen Linne' began her pastoral internship at Elim Lutheran Church in West Duluth. A prayer chain was organized and started by the Worship Committee, and a second chalice and paten were purchased. A young girl’s group was organized by Tina Anderson. Bethlehem members Sue Shelerud, Lori Peters, and Leon Peters joined a group of volunteers from First Lutheran Church on a mission trip to Washington D.C. There they served food at a homeless shelter for women.Camp Vermilion celebrated 40 years of camping.
  • 2000 In 2000, Pastor Jeff traveled with his parents to South America for the dedication of a youth retreat center that was named in their honor. Pastor Jeff’s family spent ten years in Brazil where his father developed youth retreats as part of his mission
